We at Downingtown Friends Meeting
belong to the Religious Society of Friends (new keywords), also known as
Quakers. We strive to be a loving, nurturing religious community. Rooted
in Christianity, we welcome individuals from all religious backgrounds.
We believe that each of us has access to the Divine, and we come to
Meeting for Worship to seek that path.
We gather each First Day (Sunday) in silent, expectant waiting at
Meeting for Worship in our 200-year-old Meeting House, holding ourselves
open to the Light while reaching for the divine center of our
being. We believe that every person can enter directly, without
mediation, into an empowering holy communion with God. While Meeting for
Worship is largely a period of stillness, Friends may feel a call from
the Spirit to speak.
From experience we know that revelation is ongoing. The divine
power—which Friends might call the Inner Light, the Spirit of Christ,
the Living God, or the Divine Presence—continues to work at guiding,
healing, and transforming the world today. It's the nature of this
power—love—that challenges us to lead a life centered around simplicity,
integrity, equality, stewardship, and peace.
